What a shoulder-season Google listing should say when half your sites are open

Shoulder season is not winter shutdown. Some loops still take guests, the office may be on reduced hours, and Google has separate tools for a closed gate, a short closure, and a weekly hour pattern. Mix them up and you look closed when you are booking.

Updated

Short answer: if any bookable site is open, leave the listing open. Set regular hours to match when someone can actually check in or reach a human. Use special hours for single days that break that pattern. Say in the description which loops and services run. Do not use temporarily closed for a partial park; that setting is for when nobody can stay, which is what the off-season closed guide covers.

Your Google Business Profile is the Maps listing with status, hours, photos and reviews. Campers read status before they read your website. A grey closed banner during a shoulder weekend costs you reservations you were ready to take.

Partial open vs fully closed

Google's page on marking a business closed says to use temporarily closed when you are shut for the off-season or for more than seven days with no guests. That is the right tool when the gate is chained and every site is empty.

Shoulder season is different. The water may be off in two loops while the front loop still has hookups. The store may be weekends only while sites stay open all week. The bathhouse might be on a portable while one block is renovated. Guests can still stay somewhere on the property.

Google's off-season guide in this site walks total winter closure. This guide walks the in-between.

If any site can be booked tonight, temporarily closed is the wrong status.

The off-season guide also notes a park with a few winterized hunter sites should stay open. Same rule here: open status, honest hours, plain words about what is limited.

Regular hours vs special hours

Regular hours are the repeating weekly pattern until you change them. Google's special hours page describes special hours as a way to change hours for a brief period without changing regular hours. One Google page mentions up to six days in a row; another mentions seven days or less. Both send you to temporarily closed for anything longer.

Use regular hours for the shoulder pattern you expect to run for weeks. Example: office open Friday through Monday only, gate staffed 9 to 5, for all of April and May. Enter that as the main schedule.

Use special hours when one day breaks the pattern. Example: Thanksgiving Monday office closed while sites stay open, or a Tuesday staff meeting when the gate is unmanned for one afternoon.

Regular hours vs special hours
SituationSetting to useWhat campers should see
Front loop open, back loop shut for six weeksOpen with new regular hoursHours match check-in reality; description names open loops
Office closed one holiday, sites still occupiedSpecial hours on that dateOpen park, closed office that day
Entire park empty for winterTemporarily closedGrey status; see off-season guide
Bathhouse closed three days for cleaningSpecial hours or a post; description if sites stay openSites still bookable, amenity gap explained

Do not list sites as open 24 hours in Google if someone must reach you by phone after five. Set hours to when a guest can get help, or say in the description that after-hours arrivals need a code you provide at booking.

What to say in the description

Google's guidelines say the description should explain what you offer. Shoulder season is when that paragraph earns its keep.

Name which loops or site types are open. Name what is off: water, dump, pool, store, Wi-Fi in the far loop. Give dates in plain language: back loop opens May 15, store weekends only until June 1.

Avoid promising amenities in attributes when they are winterized. If the pool is empty, wheelchair-accessible pool entries should not still say Yes. The attributes guide is the place to walk that editor.

Photos should match the open loops. A gallery full of July lake shots in April sets the wrong expectation. Add a few current shots of the open sites and the path to the bathhouse that actually works.

A shoulder-season checklist

Do this the week before you flip loops, not the morning of the first reservation.

  • Status stays open while any site can book.
  • Rewrite regular hours for the weeks ahead, a few days before they start. Google reviews edits before they show; it does not promise a speed.
  • Enter special hours for holidays and one-off closures.
  • Update description with loops, amenities, and dates.
  • Walk attributes and turn off anything not true this month.
  • Add two owner photos from the open section of the park.
  • Phone reminder for the day the back loop opens, to expand hours and description again.

When only part of the park is closed for a short job

A seven-day electric upgrade on one loop is special hours territory if the office stays open and other loops book. A three-week water project with no guests anywhere is closer to temporary full closure even if you still live on site.

If you are unsure, ask whether a paying guest could sleep on the property tonight. Yes means open status. No means read the off-season closed guide.

Category still matters while you are half open. If most shoulder guests are rigs, your primary category should still pass the IS-a test in the RV park vs campground guide.

Common questions

Half the sites are open but the office is unmanned weekdays. Open or closed?

Open, with hours that say when phone or self check-in works, and description text that explains how arrivals happen.

Should we use special hours for all of April?

No. A multi-week pattern belongs in regular hours. Special hours are for short exceptions.

Google still shows July hours in April. What went wrong?

Regular hours may not have been saved, or an edit is still in review. Check the profile again after a day. See the off-season guide for suggested edits from strangers.

We go fully closed in January but partial in November. Two guides?

Yes. Use this guide for November and April shoulders. Use the off-season guide the day every site is empty.

Does partial closure affect category?

No. Category describes what the business is year round. Hours and description carry seasonal truth.
